Algeria, 1994. S. and Lotfi, two friends from childhood, travel through the desert looking for Abou Leila, a dangerous terrorist on the run. Their quest seems absurd, given that the Sahara has not been affected by the wave of attacks. Lofti has only one priority : to keep S. as far from the capital as possible, knowing his friend is too fragile to face more bloodshed. But the closest they get into the desert, the more they will be confronted with their own violence.

Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories fill the gaps between camcorder footages as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the troubled man she didn't.

I find this film a charming and pleasant watch (save me, Nurse Bergman), but I also agree with Gene Siskel’s take in the Chicago Tribune. Farces are always predictable to some degree. (Of course the prickly nurse is going to blossom. That’s the titular metaphor!!) But the best farces are witty or outrageous enough to compensate for their predictability, and to me, Cactus Flower never quite reaches that level. Still...it's cute and worth it. As a visually radical memoir, CAMERAPERSON draws on the remarkable footage that filmmaker Kirsten Johnson has shot and reframes it in ways that illuminate moments and situations that have personally affected her. What emerges is an elegant meditation on the relationship between truth and the camera frame, as Johnson transforms scenes that have been presented on Festival screens as one kind of truth into another kind of story—one about personal journey, craft, and direct human connection.

The heartbreaking but hopeful tale of Danny Kenny and Peggy Nash, two sweethearts who meet and struggle through their impoverished lives in New York City. When Peggy, hoping for something better in life for both of them, breaks off her engagement to Danny, he sets out to be a championship boxer, while she becomes a dancer paired with a sleazy partner. Will tragedy reunite the former lovers?
Friend Review
Given the title, and the fact that the film is literally included in a DVD set of James Cagney's "Greatest Gangster Films Collection", I naturally assumed City for Conquest was a gangster movie. It isn't. There is a criminal undercurrent, but Cagney doesn't play the gangster, Elia Kazan of all people does. So that was odd. Turns out the film is actually an epic melodrama and romance set in New York City primarily following three characters who all grew up together in the city slums: Danny Kenny (James Cagney) who becomes a professional fighter, his love Peggy (Ann Sheridan), who becomes a professional dancer, and his brother Eddie (Arthur Kennedy), who becomes a professional musician and composer. The film is a multi-year spanning epic following the ups and downs of their lives as their professions bring them together and apart, and as they clash with others who seek to help or use them. The sweep of the story is admirable, if a bit untenable. Certain threads feel abandoned or underdeveloped, while a reoccurring character of a homeless man passing through the story as a narrator to the action is a magical realist touch the film doesn't need. Still, the bones of the film are strong. Cagney is great and the film manages to portray sexual violence directly and sensitively in a way which is remarkable for Code-era cinema. Ultimately the film's sense of melodrama one me over, which is doubly impressive given I put this on expecting gunfights and wise guys.

While incarcerated for murder, cartoonist Jack Deebs found escape by creating Cool World, a series featuring a voluptuous femme fatale named Holli Would. But the artist becomes a prisoner of his own fantasies when Holli transports Jack into Cool World with a scheme to seduce him and bring herself to life. Hard-boiled detective Frank Harris – the only other human in Cool World – cautions Jack with the law: Noids (humans) don't have sex with doodles (cartoons). However, flesh proves weaker than ink as Holli takes human form in Las Vegas, staring in a trans-universal chase that threatens the destruction of both worlds.

This is the movie I had assumed Clerks was as a teenager, having only seen five seconds of Mallrats. But that might just be because it's in black and white.A live-action cartoon where two actors play four characters, sometimes all in the same scene. I know the actors so I started off worried I was only enjoying it so much because I was watching was my pals, but it's too creative and funny as a movie, with distinct editing and sound choices, for it to be that. I don't know the writer, editor or the camera guy but they're all knocking it out of the park creatively. You can tell they were making each other laugh while they were making it, which creates a magical energy where you're in the room too. No-one's assuring each other it'll be funny on screen later, trust me, when the take is over. I feel like that's faint praise, but really it's amazing how few movies clear that bar.I wasn't prepared for it to be AS fast-paced and funny as it was. I can't believe how much happens in a movie well under 90 minutes, or how many places it goes while technically confined to one apartment. This is one of those movies it'll be fun to show friends who haven't heard of it before on a whim. Keep it in your back pocket until the right kind of party.

A corrupt D.A. with governatorial ambitions is annoyed by an investigative reporter's criticism of his criminal activities and decides to frame the reporter for manslaughter in order to silence him.
Friend Review
James Cagney plays a crusading journalist on the cusp of exposing a corrupt District Attorney when the DA has him framed for manslaughter. Now, Cagney is sent to prison, where the rough environment as abuse of the system will break his body and soul. As a story about a naive innocent changed by the horrors of prison, Each Dawn I Die is effective enough but a far cry from fellow 30s prison films The Criminal Code and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. The writing is more preachy and more contrived, with the resolution especially proving unbelievable at multiple levels. On the plus side, director William Keighley shoots the film pretty well, and there are some good montages portraying the arduous toll the long stint in jail is having on Cagney. Granted I think the ending whiffs this sense of time lost, but whatever. On the plus side, the climactic prison break is a pretty well-staged action scene which delivers in punchy gunfire and danger. Decent enough, but I'm not surprised the film has been generally forgotten.
Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination, finds himself on a cosmic misadventure where he must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.

User Review
Released in 1982 in a 5-hour version for Swedish television and cut to 180 minutes for theatrical release, Fanny and Alexander was meant to be Ingmar Bergman's last film. Though the great auteur lived…
On the planet Ygam, the Draags, extremely technologically and spiritually advanced blue humanoids, consider the tiny Oms, human beings descendants of Terra's inhabitants, as ignorant animals. Those who live in slavery are treated as simple pets and used to entertain Draag children; those who live hidden in the hostile wilderness of the planet are periodically hunted and ruthlessly slaughtered as if they were vermin.
Friend Review
I had long assumed Fantastic Planet to be a completely surreal work of abstract animation based on its reputation and the imagery I was familiar with but in fact the film has a pretty clear narrative. The film is set on a strange alien world where the dominant inhabitants are these giant blue humanoid creatures called Draags, while humans (called Oms) are either treated as pests and pushed to the outskirts to survive or kept as puts by the Draags. The film opens with Draag children "playing" with one such human, a fleeing mother with her new-born baby who is killed by the Draags, while a Draag child takes the now orphaned baby as her pet. This is our protagonist, who will come to learn much of the Draags' culture and technology which will eventually help him serve the advancement of Om interests as he escapes the Draags and joins a human tribe.Of course, this description might make the film sound more plot focused than it really is. All of these things do occur in Fantastic Planet, but the film is more concerned in moment-to-moment details, marveling at all the strange creatures on site to behold on this fantastic planet, and ruminating on humanity's supposed mastery over the world by placing them in an environment where they are trampled under foot. It's an interesting and flexible allegory, but the film's real strength is its design. There are so many peculiar images in this world which feels truly alien. The actual animation is pretty limited, shortcuts are taken to remove as much motion as possible and even when we get movement its usually pretty stiff and rigid, or confided to only one part of the image, like the lips moving on an otherwise totally still character in a static environment. But even these shortcomings add a kind of uncanniness that works for this material. Then there's the incredible Alain Goraguer music, blending elements of prog rock and funk, sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes off-putting, always otherworldly. There are times where the film's style clashes with its content. The ending in particularly is very confusingly executed. Still, this is a special experience.

At the end of the 19th century, Shanghai is divided into several foreign concessions. In the British concession, a number of luxurious “flower houses” are reserved for the male elite of the city. Since Chinese dignitaries are not allowed to frequent brothels, these establishments are the only ones that these men can visit. They form a self-contained world, with its own rites, traditions and even its own language. The men don’t only visit the houses to frequent the courtesans but also to dine, smoke opium, play mahjong and relax. The women working there are known as the “flowers of Shanghai”.

Which Side Are You On?
Overview
This film documents the coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky in June, 1973. Eastover's refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike, which lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive women-folk. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history of the UMWA. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with New York Women in Film & Television in 2004.

When novelist Ohm Bauman retreats to a remote inn to scatter his parents' ashes, he is consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance forces him to confront dark corners of his past.
Friend Review
Hokum is for the most part a pretty familiar horror movie experience but one that executes pretty well. The hotel where the vast majority of the action is set has a nice creepy atmosphere and the big scares, be they full-on suspense sequences or just a nice frightening visuals deliver. Some of the imagery surrounding an old kids show the protagonist used to watch is especially effective. More importantly, unlike a lot of the more buzzy horror films in recent memory, Hokum does not coast on vibes. The film sports a rock solid screenplay which effectively builds intrigue, is structured strongly, has set-ups and pay-offs, and ultimately builds to a core thesis about compassion and altruism overcoming selfishness and self-destruction. It's all very simple, but well-executed. A satisfying horror programmer.

Overview
With her life crashing down around her, Linda attempts to navigate her child's mysterious illness, her absent husband, a missing person, and an increasingly hostile relationship with her therapist.
Friend Review
If I Had Legs was one of two films last fall to depict the frayed edges of motherhood. The other was Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, which centres on Jennifer Lawrence as Grace, a new mother living in isolation and struggling to maintain her grip on reality. But Ramsay’s hesitance to fully lean into her source material, and her impulse to place undue focus on Lawrence’s beauty, transforms postpartum psychosis into an oddly “sexy” and meandering affair. I was thus eager for something a bit uglier, and If I Had Legs delivered.Linda, played by the marvelous Rose Byrne, is a Montauk-based psycho-therapist whose slowly deteriorating mental state can be attributed to a series of mundane, but anxiety-inducing events: her young daughter suffering from a pediatric feeding disorder; the ceiling of her home collapsing inwards and leaving in its place a ghastly asbestos-laden hole; a runaway client. It’s likely that Linda would ordinarily be able to tackle each issue with a level head, but without the support of her husband, who is away on an eight-week long work trip, she’s left to crumble under their weight. Bronstein, who shopped the script around for several years before it was finally picked up in 2023, is unyielding in her approach. Like incorporating elements of phantasmagoria by externalizing Linda’s mental state as images of throbbing, galactic clusters of light. Or with Linda’s child, for example, who remains faceless for the majority of the movie. Her voice a whine stitched into a tapestry of incessant background noises no more prominent to us, or Linda, than the beeping of the child’s feeding machine or the inane babble of Linda’s patients. All is absorbed into that galactic cluster because Linda suffers from a “dead brain thing,” a mind with absolutely no space left inside. This is a movie about the limits of human capacity. Linda is crumbling, but unable to fully embody this feeling for fear of slipping out of her motherly role and scaring her sickly child. Her maternal autopilot allows her to miraculously carry on the rote tasks of everyday life, but she feels or hears none of it. Bronstein then mirrors this with an exploration of Linda’s career. Linda is both a therapist with little ability to provide any real help to her patients, and patient to a fellow therapist, played by Conan O’Brian, who is both victim of her constant needling, and perpetrator of the very limits Linda exhibits in her own practice. O’Brian’s therapist is not a bad one per se, but his stony implacability makes you want to throttle him. It also reminds you that he, like Linda, is only human, and only has so much to give. The stars are gone. The planets have disappeared. Only individuals aboard space stations or starships were left to give the end a name -- The Quiet Rapture. After decades of decay and crumbling infrastructure, the Consolidation of Iron has made a discovery on a barren moon designated AT-5. An ocean of blood. Hoping to discover desperately needed resources they immediately launch an expedition. A submarine is crafted and a convict is welded inside. Due to the pressure and depth of the ocean the forward viewport has been encased in metal. If successful, they will earn their freedom. If not, another will follow. This will be the 13th expedition.
Friend Review
There's a trilogy of movies adapting the first Mobile Suit Gundam. It's about seven hours total. It gets boring in stretches, and it keeps going, and going. And as more horrors of war are inflicted on the cast, you start to miss the boring bits. You didn't know how bad things were going to get for these poor guys. It was nicer when they were alive. You regret feeling bored, like actually feel sorry you wanted things to speed up. By hours 5-7 you're just a little bit insane, on behalf of the smashed men and boys killing each other over ideas they don't understand.I've never felt anything like that before or since, but holy shit, Iron Lung comes closer than almost any movie I can think of. And it does it in 2 hours and 7 minutes. I just had to google the runtime and I'm sincerely surprised it's that short. It's a 3-14 hour long experience which somehow takes only 2.1 hours to watch.Boring sometimes? A bit, yeah. But I think those parts are boring - dare he say it, the pretentious buffoon, he's gonna say it - on purpose! The film captures the mind-numbing emptiness of flying blind in a tiny submarine where you COULD die any moment, but that moment might come several quiet, empty days from now. The fear slowly becomes a crushing drudgery. If it tried too hard to be exciting at all times, I think it would betray the unique thing it pulls off here. The main thing that REALLY has to work? It's working. Do I have problems? Who cares, they fucking did it!When you watch a "YouTuber movie," or a game adaptation in this vein, you keep a look out for the telltale signs of cringe. Is the star going to self-consciously try to 'prove they're a real actor?' Are they going to lovingly recreate the exact beats and visuals of the game without really adapting it into something new? Are they going to get bogged down in 'the lore,' or making a 'fixed' version which elaborates and explains it all, or are they going to lean on the audience's assumed understanding of all that stuff already, and expect people to come up with their own theories instead of telling a complete story? Will it feel incomplete without having played the game, or be so unlike it that it might as well have been something else?Iron Lung has some of those issues, maybe, but I'm genuinely really impressed by how well it threads the needle. The film is quite literally a vehicle for its main star, but it's shot and edited as if Mark directed someone else in the main role. There's a part where Mark gets a dab of blood on his hand and wipes it on his trousers, and it's LOVING. You see the ribbing of the fabric, the seeping-in of the blood, its shininess in the light. It knows to focus on the feel and atmosphere. A worse movie would cut or shorten that shot, or never have shot it at all. SO much thinking must have gone into where to put the camera, how to highlight the physicality of the space, and how to make that very small room keep feeling new and strange. It's not in a rush to prove Markiplier can act or direct or edit, which sort of proves he can.The sound design was brill. I love Andrew Hulshult's music, and there hasn't been 'guy fumbling with a floppy map while wearing fingerless gloves' foley this good for a long time. This choice of adaptation feels very personal. It's hard not to see parallels between the game's premise, disposably sitting in a small room hacking away at inscrutable work with an unknown chance of success, and being a YouTuber. All the anxieties about what this 'job' entails at its worst are balled up, calcified and atrophied under years of pressure and stress, and vomited back up like rotting stones, all over the floor of the SM-13. Not quite literally, but sort of literally.I think it veers a little too much into lore territory. Too much backstory for a bottle-movie with minimalist exposition focused on a mysterious and unexplainable wider plot. The movie should come prepared to answer the threads it raises, or just raise less of them. I don't really care what the convict was convicted of, or how he feels about his past, or the names of space stations and their various factions, and a bit too much time is spent on it without it adding up to anything. The game did not have a sequence where you press f to ritualistically twiddle a glass thingy you found before you could continue playing, and it was better for it. You could shave a good 8 minutes off this movie and only improve it, but I also kind of admire the excess. This is THE IRON LUNG MOVIE and my god, people who liked reading the lore in that terminal they added in a patch are going to get their fill too, even if it drags the people who wanted to watch a movie down with them. Fuck me for being annoyed about it! I deserve even less!I feel my brain thinking about this film like it's a film, and not, like, Redlettermedia's Space Cop. I didn't have to make excuses for it or say 'it's good for a low-to-mid budget movie helmed by a youtuber.' It's just good! I really wanna know how I would feel about this film if it was made by someone I never heard of and had no connection to a game I liked, but I probably wouldn't see it, and would find out about it a decade later from one of my actually-smart film friends, and mean to watch it, but take another 5 years to do it. It's a nice reminder there's a ton of really good movies out there worth looking for, and a lot still waiting to be made.Even when the writing and story get a bit off track here and there, you have to forgive it, because there's real feelings in there. Like I said, If you've ever had 1,000 subscribers and streamed yourself playing Chess to an audience of 10, you will meet yourself watching this film. This movie is a lesson in how much you can forgive a movie if it has the juice. Crucially, I can guarantee I will pay money to see the next Mark Fischbach film.If you 3d printed the Iron Lung popcorn bucket they would give you free popcorn. I printed one at .2 scale hoping they would give me a small amount of popcorn, then discovered this deal was only for Regal cinemas, and I saw it at an AMC, so now a small Iron Lung popcorn bucket will be in my life forever, for no good reason. It's sharp too. They shouldn't have designed it this sharp. The people who went to the movie with me had an even better time than I did. Later they confessed to me they did ketamine in the bathroom right before watching it. So add 1.5 stars to my review if you are watching it on your dissociative anesthetic of choice. My problems are all minor writing things really. Every aspect of the production is really well done. We need more movies like this, from newer filmmakers who came up through YouTube or elsewhere, and I kinda hope for more weird stuff like this. I hope I get to meet and personally compliment every individual person who worked on this because wow, nice one.Best film of 2026 so far. It's January 31 so that's faint praise but still, I will find the fact this film exists, and is as good as it is, extremely comforting for quite a long time.In Iron Long, all horses are canonically dead. So if you combine that with the drugs it's probably 6 stars

There are so few films that tackle the "aging actor" vs the "aging actress" trope, so I was curious how this would compare...I don't think this movie really cares about aging at all, it's not really the point, which is fine and maybe an interesting point in and of itself...that Jay Kelly never once pulls at his skin in the mirror like actresses have been doing in movies since the 1950s. He doesn't have the "hey, aren't you....you were so beautiful once..." problem. He mostly just has to debate how gray he should allow his hair to be (again, not something an actress has ever been allowed to ask herself). I am not saying that he should experience those things in this movie. I guess I am saying that men are broadly allowed to age gracefully on screen so we see an actor who doesn't seem to be struggling to land work and whose popularity hasn't wavered very much. Without the true career conflicts that occupy most of the "older actor" genre, you're left with personal conflicts and, personally, seeing a guy be like "wow I should have spent more time with my kids" isn't very compelling and could be said by virtually any successful man in any demanding profession so I often found myself wondering why am I here. Adam Sandler has the more interesting role here and I wish it had been more about him (but not that terrible b plot about the Eiffel Tower).

Craig Mathieson · The Age (Australia) — "Even if I want less of Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio as the conspirators and more of Lily Gladstone as the latter’s wife and victim, it’s impossible to deny Scorsese’s artistry. Even flawed, it’s an immense film."

Overview
The Tibetans refer to the Dalai Lama as 'Kundun', which means 'The Presence'. He was forced to escape from his native home, Tibet, when communist China invaded and enforced an oppressive regime upon the peaceful nation. The Dalai Lama escaped to India in 1959 and has been living in exile in Dharamsala ever since.

Amid the sweltering summer heat in northern Argentina, two middle-class families retreat to a crumbling country estate and a modest townhouse, where strained relationships, simmering tensions, and the presence of children and servants quietly expose the fractures of family life. Between idle days, gossip, and unspoken desires, the boundaries of class, tradition, and faith are reflected in their everyday interactions.

This film was impossible to find for many years and I have to imagine that’s why it’s not regularly programmed or cited as one of the most incisive, disturbing coming-of-age stories of the 1960s. Socialite Letty Lynton is returning to New York, abandoning one-time lover Emile Renaul in South America, when she strikes up a shipboard romance with Jerry Darrow. Renault is waiting for her in New York and will not leave her alone, so she poisons him. When detectives take her to the D.A.'s office, Jerry cooks up an alibi.
Friend Review
Did Letty Lynton live up to the legend? I think so!! I left the theater obsessed with Clarence Brown’s direction. His work in the late 1920s/early 30s is generally underrated and this features plenty of new examples of the same super clever camera movement that you see in other films of his like The Flesh and the Devil, for example. But of course, this for me was all about Joan and thinking about what this film adds to our understanding of her. In virtually every biography or study of Joan Crawford, Letty Lynton is mentioned primarily in the context of the dress and the lawsuit, which makes sense given this film's inaccessibility. But one consequence of this, in my opinion, is that we have probably underestimated the degree to which this role shaped her persona in the 1930s. Her performance is good, and even exposed new facets of her skill we don’t commonly see. For instance, there’s one scene in particular where hisses out a line with a viciousness I don’t think I’d really seen from her before. But what interested me reading reviews of this film is the prevailing sense critics had that they were observing a metamorphosis in action, that it marked her “coming of age as an actress." I wrote all about it and the film's controversial history in my latest video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiOENhQIrXw

Weirdly mean-spirited for a campy teenage revenge flick. Also Lisa is a legit psychopath, which isn't as endearing as the movie seems to think it is. Too bad because there are some really fun ideas and aesthetics here. In the end, they forgot to add the heart.

On the set of Cleopatra, Hollywood's most beautiful star, Elizabeth Taylor, fell into the arms of one of the world's greatest actors, Richard Burton - and she didn't leave. Their subsequent white-hot, scandalous love affair gave rise to the paparazzi and they became the most hunted and photographed couple on earth. Their rocky, passionate, relationship, born in front of the cameras, was subsequently captured in a series of films, including The V.I.P.s and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The last of the great, extravagant stars, flaunting diamonds, yachts and private planes, they continually seized the headlines. They even divorced and married again - only to divorce again - but remain in each other's hearts. This Elizabeth Taylor - Richard Burton story is a no-holds barred account of their undying, but impossible love.

I wish I could come here and say that, in hindsight, critics clearly missed all the positive things Liz and Dick had to offer. But unfortunately, even wearing my most generous critical goggles, I cannot resuscitate the reputation of this film. It is as bad as people feared, or maybe, hoped it would be.More on Liz and Dick here: youtu.be/Uuinujlh6ew?si=VxR_eavV8S27U31V

Really uniquely shocking film. The effects and story make the violence absolutely panic inducing to me. Maybe some of the subject matter cuts close to home but I had a legit panic attack watching this film in 2013 and never really stopped thinking about it. I'll feel bad writing anything more about it because I don't know if I want to encourage people to actually watch it, but it's gotta be a really well made film to get such raw disgust and horror out of me. I should watch it again but I still avoid it. It's kind of cool having a film that really scares me to think about. I'll probably watch it again soon and wonder why I got so worked up about it! I think I'd prefer it that way honestly. I'll give it a proper review then instead.

In a futuristic New York known as New Rome, visionary architect Cesar Catilina dreams of building "Megalopolis," a utopian city that redefines society’s limits. Opposing him is the corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who clings to power and profit. Between them stands Julia, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar forces her to choose between loyalty, ambition, and the fate of humanity.
Friend Review
Attended the New Years Day screening at Alamo...what a treat to see it again after MegaDoc. There's no one doing it like Francis—which to be clear is a good and a bad thing. You don't really get the sense from our current crop of prominent filmmakers that even if they had 120 mill to make whatever they wanted, that they'd make something so unabashedly unhinged and ponderous. He's a big brain director but a mediocre thinker, which has never been more apparent, makes this hard to stomach at times, and leads to a lot of unintended laughs. Still, I think its reputation as a Bad Movie encourages more derision than it probably deserves. At the very least, it should be studied and viewed as a dramatization of Coppola's ego. Through that lens it's endlessly fascinating...a self-described solipsist engineering a happy ending for a benevolent renegade who makes his own rules and just happens to be right about everything in spite of what everyone else says. Coppola absolutely achieved what he set out to do with Megalopolis, in that we are asking questions and having conversations, only they aren't about The Future...they're about him, and frankly, that's enough for me.

One... last... plan.
Overview
When their plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008.
Friend Review
It’s been a tough year for Canada. If it wasn’t crippling tariffs, it was suffering a brilliant defeat to the Dodgers at the World Series. If it wasn’t the Hudson’s Bay Company shuttering 96 percent of its stores, it was a brutal humiliation at the Winter Olympics when Canada’s hockey team lost to the U.S. at our own national sport. I moved away from Canada a year and a half ago, having suffered my own series of personal losses and defecting, like other Canadian creatives, for greater opportunities in the place that continues to suck my country dry. So when I sat in the theatre to watch the ostensibly goofy Canadian buddy comedy, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, it was unsurprising to me that I wanted to cry.Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol’s feature length answer to a failed attempt at running a third season of their hit 2008 web series (Nirvanna the Band the Show, duh). In the film version, we find ourselves back in the Toronto home of best friends and bandmates Matt and Jay, right where we left them. It’s been nearly two decades, and society is almost unrecognizable, as is the city of Toronto. Yet Matt and Jay are hot on the pursuit of their perennial goal: to play a show at The Rivoli. After a disastrous attempt to gain recognition via plummeting from the CN Tower into a Jays’ game at the SkyDome, the two embark (Matt excitedly and Jay against his will) on their zaniest plot yet. What if we time traveled back to 2008, a time when we may have a better shot? Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is full of Toronto inside jokes that I, a Torontonian, was pleased to pick up on. My friend and I were the only two in our sold-out NYC theatre to guffaw at, say, a jumpscare of a billboard for Q with Jian Gomeshi, or a pedestrian repeatedly saying “what is gwanin’ as he takes pictures of the time travel bus. It felt uncanny to be swelling with pride in a place full of Americans about a Canadian identity that they don’t get, and one we didn’t even realize we had, in a movie that was actually written and produced in Canada. Canada’s film industry had been kept in a sorry state more or less since its inception. If you’re non-Canadian and racking your brain for a popular Canadian film that’s come out in your lifetime, I can point to some reasons: filmmakers having to jump through tiny hoops for risk-averse funding bodies, tax shelters for American productions like Toronto and Vancouver which produce lots of jobs but little domestic art, and a century of slowly draining our creative life force south of the border (see my CBC series, Chasing Hollywood for more info on this). The oeuvre has thus far been dominated by films that are safe, slow, and funded but largely unseen. There’s a well of talent in Canada which has been consistently undermined by systemic forces. That is, until now.Full review on Polyester

Stereotypical Sergio Leone film with endless waitings and sight crossings.
One of the performances that made Robert de Niro de actor he is and an interesting way of telling a story and the evolution of America during the years of the alcohol prohibition.

At its best when it's having fun and leaning into the silly side of science friction like Elle Fanning's autonomous legs!!I was a bit annoyed that Hollywood writers continue to get the "alpha wolf" myth wrong, albeit in a slightly different way than usual here. It's still wrong. The dialog in that "protector wolf" scene feels like it's lifted from a manosphere-adjacent podcast. There is no such thing as an alpha male wolf. Pack leaders are just parents raising their offspring. A biologist-class android would know that, but I guess the reality wouldn't make a good metaphor in this particular story. I recently made a whole video essay on the alpha male myth: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpvpadX5mwM

I'm having a hard time to give this movie more than 5 stars. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, just an average movie. Sadly it wasn't scary at all. The only thing I loved about this movie were amazing soundtracks. Those soundtracks deserved better horror movie than this.

A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring a new hope to the galaxy.

Rogue One eventually gets pretty good. The third act infiltration (and eventual all-out assault) on an empire stronghold to acquire the Death Star plans is very well-realized. The story is focused and the film builds a lot of momentum, with multiple planes of action all working towards the same end. George Lucas reportedly really likes this movie and I can see why. The cross-cutting of the climax feels like what he was trying to accomplish with the climax of The Phantom Menace. More simply, the action at both the smallest and largest scale is exciting. Gareth Edwards is very good at crafting sci-fi set-pieces and with Rogue One he's especially good at capturing the enormity of the empire and the scrappiness of the rebels in the action. To that point, the fatalistic ending hits a good balance of sorrow and catharsis. I even like Darth Vader tearing it up in the hallway. I'm not blind to the pandering, but when the scene in question legitimately rips I'm a lot more amendable to it, especially since what the film really foregrounds is the utter terror of the rebel soldiers cut to ribbons.Unfortunately, it takes a long time to get to this good stuff. The first 80 minutes of the movie are deathly dull. They shouldn't be. The set-up is perfectly solid and the film looks really good, mixing the late-70s tech and aesthetics of the original Star Wars with modern standards and techniques for special effects pretty seamlessly. But the characters are quite weak. Jyn Erso is a terrible protagonist, mopey, boring and unengaged with most of what's going on around her until third act when she needs to 180 and become an inspiring leader ready to die for the cause, a pivot that is not earned or believable. Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe are completely superfluous and unneeded, with the latter's Force monk persona proving pretty annoying. One more utterance of "I'm one with the force; the force is with me" might well have driven me to murder. Defective imperial pilot Bodhi is a more sensibile fit for this movie but he too proves boring, and frankly a waste of Riz Ahmed. Saw Gerrera is ridiculous and pulls way too much of the film's attention for a character who ultimately plays a minimal role. That time could have been better allocated.Only two members of the ensemble work for me: the droid K-2, who is genuinely pretty amusing and voiced well by Alan Tudyk, and Cassian Andor. Full disclosure, I've not watched the Andor TV series which presumably fleshes the guy out much more, but even in this limited capacity he does stand out as the best character in the ensemble, motivated, world-weary, and played with the right simmering intensity by Diego Luna. I certainly wouldn't have predicted this guy could sustain a two-season television series but all the same he is good. The rest of the crew? Bunch of bums, and that severely hinders the otherwise well-executed ending. There are other problems too. The deep-faked Carrie Fisher and especially Peter Cushing are digital monstrosities that never should have made it to screens and I only hate their inclusion more given digital necromancy has only continued in Star Wars and franchise filmmaking more broadly. And there are other problems here, like the Vader scene. "Oh I thought you like the hallway scene?" Yeah, I like that scene, it's the dialogue scene with Krennic that I don't like. The suit looks cheap, the scene is flat, and god bless James Earl Jones, his voice was not what it used to be.Overall, I can see why I've been a modest defender of Rogue One. Hell I can see why for some viewers it is the clear highlight of the Disney films. When it's working it works really well. But 120 minute movie where the first 80 minutes are a bit of a slog is a difficult thing to get over. A Star Wars movie should not be that boring.
Karl Anton Verloc and his wife own a small cinema in a quiet London suburb where they live seemingly happily. But Mrs. Verloc does not know that her husband has a secret that will affect their relationship and threaten her teenage brother's life.

Rookie cop Sam Staziak has a unique gift: he is a Scanner, which gives him the power to read the thoughts of others, and also to inflict great bodily harm. When a mad scientist begins using mind control to murder police officers, Sam realizes that only he and his unique gift can put an end to the mayhem.
Friend Review
The Scanners series continues in a new direction, spun-off to focus on cops in L.A. More specifically, we open with a Scanner child being orphaned and taken in by a police officer, who then grows up to join the force himself, where his scanner powers are put to use when a cult leader using his brainwashing techniques to take revenge against the LAPD.The best thing about Scanner Cop is of course the effects. We get the usual telekinetic/pathic powers and the prerequisite head explosion, but make-up artist John Carl Buechler also brings some fun new touches, especially in that opening scene. Outside of that, Scanner Cop is really bad. I miss the Canadian setting, which even unemphasized is a lot more unique than a movie set in L.A. out of convenience. The film also has a real bad habit of setting up potentially interesting ideas (the protagonist succumbing to his powers, having his body possessed by the villain) only to just not do them, and instead do the most bland and boring thing instead. Bland and boring could also describe lead actor Daniel Quinn, who is giving nothing, and really feels put to shame in a cast full of odd character actors.

Agnes feels stuck. Unlike her best friend, Lydie, who’s moved to New York and is now expecting a baby, Agnes still lives in the New England house they once shared as graduate students, now working as a professor at her alma mater. A ‘bad thing’ happened to Agnes a few years ago and, since then, despite her best efforts, life hasn’t gotten back on track.
Friend Review
This movie should probably be required viewing for most straight men. It's ostensibly about a woman surviving a sexual assault, but it's really about the complex emotional impacts and struggles to rediscover self, connection, humor, and belonging after experiencing trauma. To that end, the filmmaker chooses not to show the actual assault itself on-screen. Instead, Agnes tries to tell her supportive best friend what happened while in a state of shock. In this case, "tell don't show" is undeniably the more powerful and emotionally gut-wrenching choice. Too many media makers end-up unintentionally sensationalizing, eroticizing, or objectifying in their insistence on filming acts of sexual violence. Sometimes it's much more impactful not to show a crime being committed. Sexual violence is one of those crimes. As film critic Renata Adler once observed, the medium of film tends to glorify anything within its frame. It takes a skilled and restrained filmmaker to understand that tendency and to make creative choices to counteract the effect. And writer-director Eva Victor proves they're is an incredibly skilled filmmaker.I also appreciate the decision to remove the perpetrator from the story-line after the attack because it means his prospective is immediately de-centered, he is removed from the frame, allowing the focus to rest squarely on Agnes."Sorry, Baby" is devastating, funny, and heartwarming all at once. Easily one of the best films of the year. The fact that it wasn't nominated for any Oscars should prove the irrelevancy of the Academy once and for all.

Canadian actress and filmmaker Sarah Polley investigates certain secrets related to her mother, interviewing a group of family members and friends whose reliability varies depending of their implication in the events, which are remembered in different ways; so a trail of questions remains to be answered, because memory is always changing and the discovery of truth often depends on who is telling the tale.

I don't know if it's because I'm concussed, or grieving loved ones, or just Canadian but I can't stop crying at this movie. The last time I cried this hard at a movie was Women Talking. The entire film I was also lamenting the fact that my mother was born in a house on stilts and slept on a dirt floor with her siblings and doesn't even know her real birthday let alone have all this beautiful footage from her youth that I could one day cherish. And then it was revealed that the footage was staged (not even a reveal, this should be obvious). I love you Sarah Polley I'm going to go read your book about women with concussions now.

Saw the restoration at Metrograph (again) and, after editing footage of so many dupes for a month, it truly almost brought tears to my eyes to see such a pristine copy. What a beautiful film, I feel so lucky to have seen it this way, and to hear Todd Haynes talk about it in person. SHOUT OUT to Christine Vachon, who truly gave a "um actually that's not the truth Ellen..." response to someone who called the film a satire. It's not a satire. Anyway, if you want to know more about how the film was made and Haynes's thinking behind it, I made a video that covers virtually everything he discussed in the q&a afterward. Whenever Tank Girl somehow managed to poke itself into a conversation in high school, someone would always feel forced to mention the movie was bad. The person saying this had, invariably, never seen it. They knew it was bad, though. Like an ancestral memory, they knew instinctively the film which came out when they were 2 had sucked. Maybe a parent had seen it, or an uncle. Or they'd been on thatguywiththeglasses.com and seen that man with those glasses shriek that it was bad, while pretending to fire a plastic gun at the screen.I always thought 'that's weird. normally people have seen the movie before they say these things.'One day when I was 17 and I was up late with insomnia yet again, I watched it.My belief in the human spirit was permanently altered, for better and worse.Tank Girl is amazing! It was fun! It was exactly the sort of thing a teenager my age and mindset needed to see in that exact moment. It was, dare I say, completely perfect, for that night in 2010. The idea someone could make a movie like that in 1995, that those people walked among us, brought me no end of joy. You're not alone. Your people are out there. We're going to be okay.Except...that means you spend every day knowing people will lie to your face, and they don't even know it. They don't even watch the things they talk about. They just play word-games with half-remembered rotten tomatoes scores and metacritic summaries. They IMAGINE an opinion at you. And if people can be so obviously wrong about this, how can you trust them to have such certain opinions about economic systems, global conflicts, or medicine? A great maw opens in the Earth and threatens to swallow you whole. It was so easy before, to assume the people around you were generally right. Now you don't know. You don't even know if you can trust yourself any more. How many things did I really form an opinion about, by myself? You have to start from scratch, watch everything, read everything, think about everything. That night, my life started. Was I radicalized by a movie where a girl fucks a talking kangaroo? Oh, I'm sorry, was there a more convenient movie to be radicalized by? Bicycle Thieves? Well, they steal a Tank, in this one, and that's better, in my opinion.Tank Girl remains a testament to the untrustworthiness of the human animal, but also to what we can achieve if we try. It is a total certainty that someone who has seen Tank Girl has blown up an oil pipeline, and I think that's a beautiful thing.

Overview
At 18 hours and 43 minutes long, 'The Complete Story of Film' collects two epic documentaries by Mark Cousins into a stunningly expansive global journey through film history from the birth of cinema to today. The Story of Film: An Odyssey is an inclusive and ground-breaking journey through the history of world cinema and a treat for movie lovers around the globe. Guided by filmmaker and historian Mark Cousins, this wonderfully insightful 15-hour love letter to the movies begins with the invention of motion pictures at the end of the 19th century, continuing through the entire 20th century of moviemaking and concluding with the globalized digital industry of the 21st. In The Story of Film: A New Generation, Cousins picks up where Odyssey left off, returning with a new epic and hopeful tale of modern cinematic innovation in the new millennium, exploring how movies and moviegoing have evolved and will continue to transform to our collective joy and wonder.

Overview
A happily engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails.
Friend Review
Kristoffer Borgli has now made two (English language) movies that should be great but fail to stick their landings. Dream Scenario and The Drama both realize their provocative premises by the end of their first acts and then drag those concepts kicking and screaming to the end until they’re barely recognizable. These movies are high in concept but low in octane. The Drama is a solid draft - the range of Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s abilities is on full display. Borgli clearly took notes on the rom com formula (gorgeous sets, aspirational jobs, a network of friends, quirked up protagonists) and is doing clever editing work to draw out some really compelling humour. When we cut to a montage of Charlie glancing with dawning horror at his little bespectacled, gun-wielding fiancé, I realized I hadn’t laughed that hard in a theatre since Nicholas Cage fart-jizzed in Borgli’s last feature. Like Dream Scenario, Borgli is once again poking at delicate subject matter. The issue, however, is that he doesn’t poke hard enough. The power of dark comedy is its ability to reveal truths about difficult topics. When Emma reveals in a no-holds-barred dinner conversation about “the worst thing you’ve ever done,” that she planned a school shooting at age fifteen, the movie veers into a troublesome sticky area which it needs to write itself out of. This is an opportunity to dig into Emma’s interiority - how and why a person could slide to such extremes and then slide back into normal life. It’s also an opportunity for insights into her and Charlie’s relationship and the strength of their bond. To ask complicated questions about love and sacrifice. But this requires depths that Borgli is not interested in diving into. His pokes don’t penetrate, they leave the topic wobbling flaccidly. The humour is sapped not from sad truths about the violence that pulsates beneath American life, but simply from endless and increasingly cheap references to guns (images of guns on mugs, a photographer saying "shoot," Emma in a photo with Charlie doing finger guns). Borgli hinges Emma’s motivations on violent aesthetics and the odd body check from a classmate. His questions about love and sacrifice are shoved into a draft wedding speech from Charlie that is deleted as fast as it’s written. And Emma is rendered more or less mute for the rest of the film, while Charlie and the others take centre stage.Worst, Borgli cultivates a universe, much like Dream Scenario, of one-dimensional characters who are set up to be well-rounded but written into stupidity for the sake of the bit. There was a kid at my high school who revealed, in a similar manner to Emma, that he had brought a weapon to his middle school after years of vicious bullying. No one was hurt, but he ended up spending the night in jail. He was by all accounts a gentle kid and extremely remorseful, and when he told this story my class gathered around to hug him. This was a response from a group of fourteen year olds - yet every one of Borgli’s 30-somethings respond to Emma’s confession with the same keyboard warrior sensibility of the characters persecuting Paul in Dream Scenario. It’s cynical, and if your screenplay needs to forgo all reason in order to carry out its premise, then maybe it needs a second look. The absurd escalation of the narrative following Emma’s confession would be more justified if she actually carried out the shooting but, of course, Borgli would be making a very different movie. Instead it's stuck in the sticky area, poking that which it cannot break, asking more questions than it’s interested in answering, and infuriatingly straddling genres that it would absolutely nail if it wasn’t so smugly trying to do it all. Nevertheless, I’m excited for Borgli’s next feature. I think next time he’ll land it.

George Hardy is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can't possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.
Friend Review
The sheep detectives is a thoughtful meditation on grief and the importance of institutional memory. If you're surprised it framed like that, I was just a surprise when I saw those themes on-screen in the theater, because it's also a very silly talking animal movie about a bunch of sheep who solve a murder. There's a central narrative conceit we learn about very early on in the movie, where the sheep have this ability to collectively forget something that's difficult or upsetting to them. Forgetting one of their group rituals. They close their eyes, they count to three, and when they open them again they've completely forgotten whatever was troubling them. Essentially, they're choosing to live in blissful ignorance, over having to face the harsh reality of the world as it exists. So when their shepherd is murdered, the sheep have a choice to make. They can choose to forget him. Forget everything he meant to them. And be happy, or they can choose to collectively remember. If they choose to remember, then of course, they must face the loss and process their grief. But if they remember, they can do something about it. They can seek justice. The message is clear - justice isn't possible unless we face reality. At this point, the metaphor becomes obvious, this movie isn't really about sheep. It's about society, especially in the West, and the undeniable tendency for large segments of the population to stick our collective heads in the sand and pretend the terrible things that are happening in the world aren't really our problem. We our taught to prioritize our own comfort, over facing the climate catastrophe, or the descent into fascism, or imperialism being done in our name. But if we do that, if we continue to live in denial like the sheep in the movie, then we can never be part of the solution. We can never find justice. We can never build a better world. That's a poignant message for a movie about talking animals. I should say that the movie itself isn't overtly political but the implications are quite profound. To be clear, this is a family film. It is funny, and silly, and ridiculous, but not in a lowest common denominator way that we're so used to seeing in talking animal movies. It's genuine. It's earnest in the style of movies like Babe or Paddington. I appreciate unapologetic sincerity. I appreciate a movie for all ages that isn't afraid to tackle difficult issues. And The Sheep Detectives respects the emotional intelligence of its viewers, both young and old.

Pauline Kael · The New Yorker — "I didn't remember anything of the Milan Kundera novel. But as the movie started I knew just what was coming next and I loved seeing it happen -- it was like a dream that you long to return to, and lo! there it is."
Vincent Canby · New York Times — "It's possible to read the book in less time."

Overview
In the midst of the Great Depression, manipulative emcee Rocky enlists contestants for a dance marathon offering a $1,500 cash prize. Among them are a failed actress, a middle-aged sailor, a delusional blonde and a pregnant girl.
Friend Review
In 1969, drug company Bristol-Myers bought a majority stake in production company Palomar Pictures and briefly found themselves making movies, alongside making Excedrin and deodorant. That era of filmmaking is long over but Bristol-Myers is still sitting on the rights to a number of classics from the New Hollywood that they've done almost nothing with. Many of these movies have no digital presence either streaming or as a rental, their physical media releases are long out of print, or in some cases, never received a Blu-Ray release in North America at all. They Shoot Horses, Don't They is one of those films and consequently, one of my most substantial New Hollywood blindspots. In fact I suspect the film's modern day limbo has played a role in diminishing its legacy since 1969 because this used to be a huge movie. It still holds the record for the most Oscar nominations for a film not nominated for Best Picture, it was the directorial debut for Sydney Pollack, and it was a major breakthrough for Jane Fonda, who already was a movie star by 1969, but Horses demonstrated new depths and a sheer force of power that had previously only been hinted at.The film is also very much in dialogue with the American cinema of the late 1960s. Set during The Great Depression, we follow a collection of desperate people who sign up for a dance marathon on the Santa Monica Pier, a grueling, physically demanding contest which lasts weeks, in the hopes of winning a $1,500 cash prize. The crushing ache and hopelessness of extreme poverty is consistently contrasted in the false glamour of old Hollywood. One of our contestants is an aspiring actress who very much clings to that kind of glamour in spite of everything, and in fact the California setting means work in the movies is a frequent conversation point. Moreover, the dance hall is itself littered with the torn posters of Hollywood classics, a constant juxtaposition with the shabby spectacle we - and the audience for the marathon - are bearing witness to. Stylistically too, the film's disjunctive editing blurs timelines, jumping around non-chronologically between our main story and flashbacks framed with various levels of abstraction. To some extent these New Hollywoodisms make for a not entirely flattering comparison for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Midnight Cowboy in particular is doing a lot of the same things to more compelling effect, its evocations of Old Hollywood more sophisticated, its surreal flashbacks and flights of fancy more daring. On the other hand, it's still a type of filmmaking that greatly interests me so I unsurprisingly enjoyed Horses a lot. It's an extremely ambitious first-feature for Pollack, who captures both the utter despair of the setting and the mounting pressure and suspense as the marathon grinds on and the contestants' bodies break further down. I also really can't overstate how good Fonda is. From her on-screen introduction she commands your attention, but it's worth stressing the entire cast is fantastic. And for all the ways I've stressed the film as a product of the New Hollywood specifically, a story about the grim spectacle of "contest as humiliation ritual" for the slim hope of escaping poverty is incredibly salient in our modern culture. The film's ending is not very encouraging in this regard, but it's the right one.

After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.

This is my favorite movie of 2025! Absolutely fantastic. Heartfelt. As good as the original and unexpectedly funny in perfectly timed moments. The whole theater was laughing. Try to see it in an actual theater if you can before it gets downgraded and relegated to Netflix screens. It's worth it, promise.

Steve Murray · Atlanta Journal-Constitution — "Wild, yes. But not much heart."

Scott Tobias · The Dissolve — "There's a spontaneous, anything-can-happen feeling to it that's the primary appeal of any road movie."
Young orphan Heathcliff is adopted by the wealthy Earnshaw family and moves into their estate, Wuthering Heights. Soon, the new resident falls for his compassionate foster sister, Cathy. The two share a remarkable bond that seems unbreakable until Cathy, feeling the pressure of social convention, suppresses her feelings and marries Edgar Linton, a man of means who befits her stature. Heathcliff vows to win her back.
Friend Review
I could see either Bette Davis (who originally wanted the role) or Vivien Leigh (who Olivier wanted) playing Cathy—both clearly can nail the bratty girl bopping around in a Mary Todd Lincoln becurled wig...but I quite like Oberon's performance here. Something very childlike about her impetuousness and panic that works really well for Cathy. She embodies Cathy's aspirations and ambitions so well, because she understood them herself.More about Merle Oberon in Wuthering Heights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8ic1r3fXw
